Coming Soon: Harley Davidson 72 and Softail Slim Review

THE NEW SEVENTY-TWO from benedict campbell on Vimeo. Last week we published an overview of Harley Davidson’s newest bikes, the 72 and the Softail Slim. This week, Bullz-Eye.com will be joining Harley Davidson in Miami to review both of them in person. Make sure to follow us on Twitter @bullzeyedotcom to get up to the [...]

Harley Davidson Launches Two New Models

Coming off the success of such bikes as the Blackline and Forty-Eight, Harley Davidson has made two additions to their Blackline range. These bikes continue the theme of taking styling cues from the past and bringing them up to the present, and offer an extra dose of attitude to the bikes they are based off [...]

Roland Sands Design’s Flat Track Blackline

When Bullz-eye reviewed the Harley Davidson Blackline late last year, I found it high on curb appeal, low on cornering prowess. Of course, you can’t expect a boulevard crusier that weighs around 800 lbs. to be athlete on the street either. Roland Sands Designs didn’t agree with this statement and decided to make the Blackline [...]

Bonhams Las Vegas Motorcycle Sale sees big numbers for vintage bikes

1955 Vincent Black Prince
1953 Vincent Black ShadowBonhams wrapped up an impressive motorcycle auction in Las Vegas, and some very pricey metal rolled across the block. While seriously expensive bikes like the 1955 Vincent Black Prince pictured above and a 1915 Harley-Davidson 11-F Twin failed to bring home enough cash to find new owners, the 1953 Vincent Black Shadow to the right brought home well north of its early bid estimates. A new owner laid down a hefty $122,500 for the pleasure of ownership. Likewise, one very sparse-looking 1907 Indian Camelback went for $67,860.

We took the time to pick through the auction’s offerings to show off some of the more interesting bikes to roll across the stage in Las Vegas. You can check out the gallery for our personal faves or click over to the Bonhams site for more information on specific lots. The auction featured plenty of memorabilia in addition to full bikes.

Tour of Vance and Hines

Last weekend, Vance and Hines was gracious enough to open its doors for journalists and members of HOG (Harley Owners Group). For those of you unfamiliar with who Vance and Hines are, they are a race team that started back in the late 80s, but have managed Harley’s NHRA race program with the V-Rod since [...]

Easy Rider chopper survives fire – Click above to watch video after the jump

Fear not, friends. One of the original Captain America Harley-Davidson Pan Head choppers from Easy Rider has survived a Texas warehouse fire. The raked-out Hollywood icon reportedly managed to escape the calamity with little more than a heavy dusting of soot and ash. The bike was one of 30 vehicles housed in an Austin, Texas building that went up in flames yesterday, and while all of the cars, trucks and bikes were collectables, the Easy Rider chopper was the most famous of the bunch. The former hardware store was packed wall-to-wall with antique Jaguar, Ford and Rolls-Royce models. At this point, it’s unclear exactly which vehicles survived the blaze and which are headed for the scrapyard, but we do know that Peter Fonda’s Harley will live to ride another day (in fact, there’s actually some debate about the provenance of the bike either way).

Investigators say that the fire appears to have started in the rear of the building, and that as of right now, it looks like arson is to blame. Setting fire to another man’s property is never acceptable, but trying to torch the Easy Rider Panhead is a sin of a different caliber. Hit the jump to see the video for yourself. Hat tip to Nathan!

Bikes at the Greenwich Concours

One thing the organizers of the Greenwich Concours do well is ensure that motorcycle aficionados don’t feel left out. This year was no different, as Sunday featured row of bikes diverse in both chronology and purpose. No matter your interest, if two wheels were your thing, you were covered by a range of offerings that included everything from rarities like the Honda NR750 to a 1917 Harley-Davidson that pretty much embodied the definition of “patina.”

It was obvious that the majority of these bikes weren’t babied garage queens. Most appeared to see regular action, and their owners were eager to share them with the crowd. “C’mon, take a closer look!” was a common phrase uttered to anyone pausing to show interest in a particular bike. It’s that kind of camaraderie that makes Greenwich feel as accessible as any local enthusiasts’ gathering, even though it’s a serious Big Deal concours with million-dollar vehicles littering the grounds. Hit the gallery below for a look at the motorcycles and scooters that were on hand this year.

Over the top on a Harley-Davidson XR750: Take two for Bubba Blackwell’s record-breaking leap

Do you remember the days when motorcycle jumps were measured by cars rather than feet? We know at least one man who is all too familiar with those times, and may even be haunted by them. His name is Bubba Blackwell. He is what we would call a traditional daredevil, consumed with setting records and garnering fame. It is not only Bubba’s Harley but also his Stars and Stripes one-piece suit that leaves no room for guesswork as to his respect and admiration for the late Evil Knievil.

In 1998, Mr Blackwell set a record of his own by clearing 20 cars aboard his Harley-Davidson XR750, logging the longest successful flight on that model. In 2001 gravity got the best of him, leading to the spectacular crash featured on the History Channel’s show Shockwave, which focuses on a 22-car attempt to leap over his own record. Here we go again. On June 12 Bubba will fire up his trusty HD and head to Laconia, New Hampshire, bent on making take two a success by clearing 22 Ford Focuses.

Amid a generation of modern daredevils like Robbie Maddison stretching the world distance records well over 300 feet, Bubba’s record may not appeal to everyone. But one thing is for sure – with a history like Blackwell and his XR750 have had, we can be assured that the sport of flying motorcycles will continue to entertain us and motivate the next generation to push the limits.
