Get Apocalypse Ready with Icon’s 1000 Collection

So, the apocalypse has happened. Whatever is going to be the cause- zombies, asteroid, disease, Justin Bieber’s new CD, etc.- it’s going to be bad. But there is a bright side. Think about it, all those empty roads, no distracted drivers, and an endless supply of recently abandoned motorcycles at your disposal. If it wasn’t [...]

ACB: The Great Escape

Blitz R60/2 – The great Escape from Hush on Vimeo. Since we’re on a bit of a motorcycle tear today, we might as well keep the combo going with footage of some vintage Bavarian machinery in the snow. Titled the “Great Escape,” this clip just shows a trip on an old R60 during the deep [...]

Roland Sands Design’s Flat Track Blackline

When Bullz-eye reviewed the Harley Davidson Blackline late last year, I found it high on curb appeal, low on cornering prowess. Of course, you can’t expect a boulevard crusier that weighs around 800 lbs. to be athlete on the street either. Roland Sands Designs didn’t agree with this statement and decided to make the Blackline [...]

RM Auctions America acquires Bator vintage motorcycle company

Glenn Bator of RM Auctions America

RM Auctions has come a long way in relatively few years. The Canadian automotive auction house has only been around a couple of decades – a drop in the bucket compared to rivals like Bonhams, Gooding & Co or even Barrett-Jackson – but has quickly become one of the biggest names in the business, gaining access to places like Maranello and Villa d’Este where no other auction house has gone before.

Only a few months ago, RM Auctions announced the acquisition of Auctions America, and now is adding a motorcycle division to its expanding portfolio with the takeover of Bator Vintage Motorcycle Auctions. The integration gives Auctions American by RM a solid foothold in collector motorcycles. It also brings with it the talents of company founder Glenn Bator (pictured above), a noted vintage motorcycle expert and former curator of the Otis Chandler museum, the collection of the publishing magnate that was liquidated to the record tune of $36 million after its namesake founder’s passing.

Bator and RM will be holding their first post-merger motorcycle auction during the Auburn Cord Duesenberg festival in Auburn, Indiana, this September. Details of the announcement in the press release after the jump.

Motorcycles at the 2010 Greenwich Concours

One thing the organizers of the Greenwich Concours do well is ensure that motorcycle aficionados don’t feel left out. This year was no different, as Sunday featured row of bikes diverse in both chronology and purpose. No matter your interest, if two wheels were your thing, you were covered by a range of offerings that included everything from rarities like the Honda NR750 to a 1917 Harley-Davidson that pretty much embodied the definition of “patina.”

It was obvious that the majority of these bikes weren’t babied garage queens. Most appeared to see regular action, and their owners were eager to share them with the crowd. “C’mon, take a closer look!” was a common phrase uttered to anyone pausing to show interest in a particular bike. It’s that kind of camaraderie that makes Greenwich feel as accessible as any local enthusiasts’ gathering, even though it’s a serious Big Deal concours with million-dollar vehicles littering the grounds. Hit the gallery below for a look at the motorcycles and scooters that were on hand this year.

2010 Huntington Beach Concours celebrates 25th anniversary in spectacular style

2010 Huntington Beach Concours – Click above for high-res gallery

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year was one of our favorite smaller concours, the Huntington Beach Concours d’Elegance in Southern California. Not quite as prestigious as some of the other concours we cover – like Greenwich, happening on the opposite coast on the very same weekend – it’s always an eclectic show, featuring everything ranging from hot rods to supercars, pre-war classics and motorcycles. One of the things that makes this show extra special is what makes some real estate worth a lot more than others – location, location, location. Within spitting distance of some of the biggest and best automotive collections in the world, this laid-back exhibition always manages to bring out some huge surprises.

Split over two days, the Saturday show is billed as Hot Rods in the Park, and focuses mainly on American iron, while Sunday is the Concours d’Elegance proper, with more European makes represented. Sunday was the day to see Corvettes, Ferraris, Alfas, Minis, Nimbuses and Ducatis if you’re into those kinds of things. We stopped in for a spell on both days, fully prepared to be wowed, and the entrants still blew us away. Sure the muscle cars and classics were cool as usual, but check out the lead sleds, customs and bikes that turned out this year! Highlights included the vintage custom Harleys, ’57 “Scraped” Caddy, ’61 409 Impala SS and a ’42 Willys Americar Coupe Altered drag car. As nice as those were, the standout vehicles of the weekend were even more impressive.

Randy Simmons brought a 1947 Hudson pickup powered by a 7.3-liter Power Stroke turbodiesel. It’s an A/DT class SCTA land speed record truck that has run over 135 miles per hour and looks like it could hold a place of honor in just about any museum in the world. Ducati got our attention when we noticed an aluminum paint job on the tank of one of its display bikes. Yep, it was the new limited-edition 1198R Corse – the updated-for-2010 1098R replacement. And then there was a streamlined red motorcycle that stopped us in our tracks. Have you seen The World’s Fastest Indian yet? If not, go rent now. The late Burt Munro’s highly-modified Indian Scout has been resurrected and brought to a level of finish that would have left him dumbfounded. The bike just emerged from a massive restoration project and was being shown in anticipation of its official coming-out party at Pebble Beach in August. That’s when the engine will be re-fired for the first time in 21 years. Even standing still, it’s a mighty impressive bike, as well as a bit of motoring and movie history.

28th Annual Dana Point Concours d’Elegance adds motorbikes

If it’s good enough for Pebble Beach… For the first time in its history, the 28th Annual Dana Point (née Newport Beach) Concours d’Elegance will host an exhibit of antique and vintage motorcycles alongside the usual assortment of incredible automobiles from every era. The event has been moved up to the summer this year, but will once again be held at the St. Regis Resort in Dana Point, California.

Those who show up on that Sunday (June 27, 2010) will find that Alfa Romeo is the featured marque, celebrating 100 years of great racing and road cars in 2010. The 80-year-old Pininfarina design house will also be feted, but the big news for bike lovers will be the exhibition-only classes featuring 65 significant motorcycles from throughout history. The preliminary groupings divide European, American and Japanese motorcycles, as well as production and competition models.

Entry forms and additional information can be found online at: www.DanaPointConcours.org.
